The Night of Las Posadas - Tomie dePaola (read aloud)

Today we looked at a Mexican-American traditional holiday known as Las Posadas.  This is a read-aloud from acclaimed author Tomie dePaola.  The story takes place in Santa Fe, and introduces students to the religious customs of Las Posadas, including lighting the streets with farolitos, walking through the town in a procession, and looking for a home to celebrate the birth of Christ.

We compared and contrasted the differences between Las Posadas and a traditional American Christmas.  Students identified that Las Posadas had farolitos instead of Christmas Lights, poinsettia plants instead of Christmas trees, and the focus was on Jesus instead of Santa.

It was nice to get the class thinking about how people all over the world celebrate with friends and family in the Winter.  How many different holidays include lights, food, gifts, and giving thanks for all that we have.  I wanted them to realize that it's okay if our friends don't celebrate the same holidays or customs that we do.  I also wanted them to realize that it is important to be kind to people, no matter what their family celebrations may be.

I hope that this unit opens their eyes and hearts to a wider world that we live in.  I hope that they took something special away from it.  And I hope that they are all better citizens in this world because of it.  Happy Holidays to everyone.  Thank you for sharing this journey through life with me.  I am thankful to be your teacher!!

Kevin's Kwanzaa | Children's Books Read Aloud

Here was an introductory video that I shared this week about Kwanzaa.  It explains what Kwanzaa is and how it is celebrated in many African-American homes.  I feel that it is important to create an awareness about what other people celebrate around the holidays that are different than what they might celebrate at home.  It's also a great opportunity to learn firsthand accounts of friends and classmates that participate in some of the other Winter Holidays celebrated in our community.  Kwanzaa begins on December 26th and continues for a week through the first day of the new year.  Happy Kwanzaa to our families that celebrate, and thank your for sharing "the first fruits of the harvest" with all of us!!

Hanukkah || Mayim Bialik

This week we are learning about Winter Holidays.  I am sharing a few short videos each day to help you see what we are learning about.  We also are making books, playing traditional games, and discussing how these holidays are alike/different.  The holidays are special to us all, but not necessarily for the same reasons.  This small unit is to help create awareness and appreciation in the minds of our young learners, so that they can be respectful of others in our community that maybe celebrate a different holiday than we do.  Whatever you holiday may be, we hope that you enjoy it with your loved ones!!

P is for PLANTS! (Student Plant Collages)

This past week I assigned an At-Home Project where students go on a nature hike with their family looking at plants.  We have been learning about what plants need, also practicing the letter P in class.  Here are the collages that my students shared with me.  What "P"recious "P"rojects you created!!

Plant Survey Projects (November At-Home Assignment)

If you haven't started yet, please consider doing a Plant Survey Project with your homework.  You can work on it all month.  You can choose to find exotic plants at a nursery, or just some cool plants in your own backyard.

The kids are asking questions to learn more about this plant.

This month one of our learning focus themes is about plant and animal needs.  The At-Home Assignment provided in your Homework Packets is conducting a Plant Survey.  The worksheet and questions are provided.  All you need to do is find a really cool plant that you want to learn more about...and an expert to ask your questions to.  Mom and Dad can take a picture of your special plant, and a grownup can help you write down the responses your expert gives you.  Plants are an essential part of all life on earth.  They provide us with food, oxygen, tools, shelter, even clothes.  It's hard to imagine what life would be like on Earth if we didn't have any plants.  Would humans even be able to survive here without them???

Have fun and please share what you learn with all of your friends at school!

The Color Run is Back On!!

Families, we are gearing up again for the Color Run.  It has been rescheduled for November 8th.  If you still haven't signed your child up or uploaded a picture to make a video, please consider doing so tonight.  It is a quick and easy way to get the message out and help your child receive pledges (just upload the video link to social media and your friends and family will make pledges online).

Here is my son's video to give you an idea of what they look like.  I will also repost the funrun link so that you can get your child started if you need to.  Right now our class alone has raised over $750 for our school.  I am hoping that we can double that number if we all do our part in getting the message out to our community!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Tomorrow is Halloween at Cordelia Hills.  The students will start the day with a short parade (parents are welcome to stay and watch in the amphitheater), then we will return to class and start our day.  In our class we will do Halloween-themed activities, read Halloween stories, and watch Halloween video clips throughout the day.  Students may bring a change of clothes if they do not wish to wear their costume all day, but we will NOT be helping them change.  Also students are not allowed to bring weapons to school with their costumes (so all you pirates, ninjas, and police officers).

Please arrive on time and ready for fun!  We will NOT be giving out candy or treats tomorrow, so please save all of that for home.  If any of you want to stay and help in the classroom, you are more than welcome, just be sure to check in with the front office and get a visitor's badge.

Thanks!!

Just a fun song to help students remember why it is important to "JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS!!"
Please take some time out this week to discuss with your children what Red Ribbon Week means to you and your family.  Encourage them to be strong and stand up for themselves.  Maybe have them draw pictures about things that are better than drugs and alcohol.  (Ex- Bikes are cool...not drugs!)

2017 Boosterthon Color Run is Coming to Cordelia Hills!!

Parents,

Our class is having a blast preparing for the Coyote Color Run coming up soon! We've also begun to learn how to "be brave" and live with character through Boosterthon's character theme, Castle Quest. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle, our students are learning the "SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO" from a cast of colorful characters. Make sure to ask your students what they've learned each day, and together you can watch the story unfold on funrun.com!

Remember, we need your help connecting to sponsors who can make a pledge to help our school! Please make sure all pledges for the laps are entered on funrun.com. The more pledges we get, the more incentives our class earns on our Pledge-O-Meter. Plus, for every $30 per lap our class pledges, a donation will be made to help teachers fund their classroom projects through Boosterthon's giveback initiative, Project Classroom. I know our students are excited to rise to the challenge and lend a helping hand to teachers everywhere!

Thank you for your generosity and support of our school. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a great day!

P.S. Make sure to register your child on funrun.com. He or she will receive a FREE GIFT just for being signed up. Use our school registration code: 519387

At-Home Activity
Tactile Character Portraits
(Due: October 12th)

Where the Wild Things Are    Pete the Cat Moana

Project Details:
*Students choose a Favorite Character from a story to make a tactile portrait of.
*Parents may print out a picture of the character to use as a guide.
*Glue the picture to cardboard or other sturdy object to build the portrait on.
*Students use everyday objects found around the house to complete the portrait.

*The name of the book also needs to be written on the portrait.
*Students need to write 3 words that describe the character on the portrait.
*Student’s name needs to be on the back of the portrait.

*Students CAN make a model instead of a portrait if they wish (like Where the Wild Things Are).
*Students MUST use at least 3 colors AND 3 different tactile elements in their portrait.
*Portrait MUSt be of a storybook character (not tv character, family member, or themselves).

NOUNS Scavenger Hunt Slideshow Project

Parents, we have been learning that Nouns can be people, places, or things.  To review this concept, I thought it would be fun to let you take them on a Nouns Scavenger Hunt.  You can go out into the world and look for evidence (which is my favorite way of doing this!), then let your child use a Smartphone or tablet to capture their nouns with a picture (like Pokemon Go!, but with NOUNS).  Another idea for the busy families would be to take a virtual Scavenger Hunt where you look for examples of nouns in the images found online.

Simply link the images you wish to use to the slides provided, then label each slide with the name of the noun you have found (you may edit the sentence if needed so that it doesn't sound weird).  You don't need to send the finish product back to me, I will see them as you go since I created the original slideshow projects.

If the tech angle is too difficult or undesirable for your family, simply print out the slides and let your child glue examples onto them and put it together like a book to bring in and share.  It's really up to you how you want to complete the Nouns Scavenger Hunt.  Have Fun.  Be Creative.  Ask your child lots of questions to make sure they understand what are nouns and why they have chosen the specific examples they picked.  I can't wait to see what all of you produce!!

To join in the fun, I created this sample to share with all of you as a guide to get you started.
Happy Hunting!!

What are the Rules at Your House?

We are learning a lot about rules in school.  This next week in your homework, we want to know what are the rules at your house?  Have mom or dad take a video of you sharing the rules that you have at your house.  Then have them email the video to your teacher.  Who knows, maybe it will even get shared on the Class Blog like this example I found online.  Remember, Rules are Important.  They make it fair for everyone.  Are your rules in line with our school rules: Safe, Respectful, Responsible??

I am excited to try out this fun reading program with our class.  We are in the process of buying class licenses to use this program on our iPads in the classroom, but I have already created our student accounts if you would like to try it out at home with your child for Homework.

It is supposed to be completely free online (meaning on a computer).
It costs about $5 for the app if you use a device.

I would recommend NOT buying the app unless you try it out on a computer first and absolutely LOVE IT.  We will get to use it in the classroom weekly, so you won't need to buy it.
Look for the Parent Letter and Student Login card in next week's homework, and then check it out.  Please email or message me back to let me know if your child likes this program.

Welcome to Cordelia Hills Elementary!!

My name is Mr. Linnet and I will be your Kindergarten teacher this year.  I am so excited to work with all of you.  We have a beautiful campus, new Common Core curriculum, and some state-of-the-art innovative technology for all of you to use during your time here as a Cordelia Hills Coyote!

In our class, we focus most of our attention in developing the skills needed to be strong readers and writers.  Another part of the day is dedicated to improving your knowledge of math and science.  And the rest of the time is spent challenging yourself through a variety of fun station activities. You will use a touch-screen Smartboard, iPads, robotics (Sphero and Ollie), whiteboards, digital and printed books, and lots and lots of manipulatives.  I know that you are going to LOVE coming to school each day!!

Parents, don't forget to link up to our Class Dojo & Seesaw to get personalized feedback on your child's progress, as well as updates from me on what's happening in our class.  This blog was created for you.  I hope that you bookmark it and use it weekly.  You can access your child's digital Choice-Homework, Scholastic Book Orders, as well as many engaging links that your child can use at home to get some extra practice on the skills I am teaching in the classroom.

Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs | California Academy of Sciences

Parents, If you're looking for an exciting outing this summer, I'd like to recommend the CA Academy of Science in San Francisco.  They have a Pterosaurs exhibit that would be an exciting connection to our Prehistoric Life Unit we just finished up.  They also have many other wonderful things to check out and would be a great trip for the entire family!  Check out the video and link provided to see if it interests you.  They even do sleepovers called "Penguins and Pajamas" or something like that where you can actually spend a night at the museum.

https://www.calacademy.org/penguinspajamas-sleepovers

Whatever your family decides to do this summer, I hope that you all have an amazing time.
Stop by and say "Hi" next year.  My door is always open to former students that want to check in on what we are learning about!!

Raising a Dinosaur Giant

So we have been learning all about dinosaurs.  This week we are going to become Paleontologists and attempt to "Raise a Dinosaur Giant"!!  Check out this cool PBS video about how real Paleontologists find, clean, and raise a dinosaur skeleton, then check back to see if we are able to make a cool reproduction ourselves.  It should be really fun!!

Let's Become Dinosaurs!!!

It's that time of year again...time to learn about, sing about, read about, write about, and pretend to be...DINOSAURS!!!  This is always one of the more exciting units of study, and one that the students won't soon forget.  Check out some Dino Mask information, then look at some of the masks we have made in previous years.  Get creative, have some fun, and make something really AWESOME!!

AT-HOME PROJECT:  Make a Dinosaur Mask  (Due Thursday 5/25)

Okay class, for the next three weeks we will be learning about dinosaurs.  We will focus on identifying and classifying dinosaurs into 3 categories:

Carnivores – meat eaters

Herbivores – plant eaters

Omnivores – meat & plant eaters

Your task is to MAKE a dinosaur mask to wear to school on Thursday (5/25) that your friends can use to guess what kind of food you ate.  I will also be making a mask because it will be a lot of FUN!!

You can look online for ideas, but you need to make it yourself.  Be creative.  No print and color projects allowed.  HOMEMADE!!

I will see all you “terrible lizards” at the end of the month!!

Baby Chick ID Contest!

Help us Out!!
So these are our baby chicks.  They are growing fast!  I got them for a Life Cycles unit our Kindergarten team is doing, but I forgot to get the breed names for each of them (Yes, they are all different breeds).

Let's have a guessing game and see what they are.  Everyone that's interested can comment back what breed they think they are, and I'll share a followup pic after they mature to full grown chicks, to see if you're right.

My students are loving this unit of study, and can't wait to see what they become.  They made their predictions today in their observation journals!!

Student of the Week: DeAnna!

This week we get to celebrate our friend DeAnna.  She is a bright and cheerful student that shares her enthusiasm and helpfulness with others every day in the classroom.  DeAnna loves her family, her friends, and her dog Buttercup.  She enjoys eating spaghetti (but only with the meatballs cut in half), playing soccer, and reading "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss.  DeAnna enjoys going to Chuck E. Cheese, Disneyland, and camping with her family.  When she grows up she wants to be a veterinarian so she can help animals that are hurt or sick.  Thank you so much for adding your vibrant personality to our classroom.  It's so much fun being your teacher, DeAnna!!

This week's Digital Homework Packet & Field Trip Reminder

In case anyone is having trouble accessing the links provided, hopefully this digital copy helps in accessing the content for this week's Homework.  I hope you are all liking the new format.  The kids seemed to really enjoy the flexibility of choice and the freedom to choose some of their own interests to study.  Remember, the content doesn't usually show up on mobile devices, so accessing from a home computer is preferred (if available).

Digital Homework: April 3-7, 2017

Also, just a reminder that this week we are going to Oakland this Thursday to visit Chabot Space & Science Museum, then to get out into nature at Joaquin Miller Park.  It should be a fantastic adventure, so make sure your children bring their lunches, their enthusiasm, a water bottle, and their curiosity.  It's destined to be "out of this world"!!!

The Impossible Egg Crush Experiment (like what we did in class today)

If your children come home today talking all about how we tried to crush eggs in our hands today, this video might give you some perspective about the experiment we did today.

The purpose was learning about the shape of the egg, and how it is designed to hold up against pressure (like the mother hen sitting on it) without cracking.  Many of the students guessed that they COULD crack the egg, but only 1 student was actually able to.  The kids really liked it when one of the parents was able to crack her egg, and the mess splattered all over me!!

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this video, and maybe do a followup at home where you let your child recreate the experiment, and explain to you what it going on.  Have a great weekend!!

The Little Chick Company - It All Starts With An Egg - For Kids

Today we watched this video from Australia about eggs.
Feel free to watch it again and ask your children what they have learned about eggs.
-Are the eggs we eat "fertilized" or "unfertilized" eggs?
-What does "fertilize" mean?
-What are the 3 types of eggs shown in the video?
-How many eggs to chickens lay each week?

Have fun!!

Let's Try Homework in a NEW way!

Spring is Here!
With it comes newness.  New plants and animals.  New sights and smells.  In our class, comes a new way to try homework.  I sent a copy of this digital form home with each of the students, but if you touch on the link here, you should be able to access the links in it digitally.

Students are given choices over what they want to accomplish each day.  Some of the items repeat (but the students should only do the activity once).  I'm looking forward to feedback from all of you on how this new style compares to the traditional packets we have been doing all year.

I hope that you family enjoys this.  Happy Spring!

Student of the Week: Mark!

This week we are celebrating our friend Mark (or Junior) as the Student of the Week.
Mark is a quiet, hardworking, and friendly person that gets along well with everyone.
He likes chicken, football, dogs, and his Planets book.  He loves playing games (like Hide & Seek) and watching YouTube videos.  His favorite places are DisneyWorld, Six Flags, and Jump Highway.
When Mark grows up, he wants to be an engineer so he can build things like big buildings!!
Thank you for being a positive member of our class, Mark!

What was the first known lifeform in space?

This was a question that I posed to the class today as we were learning about Jupiter.
I let them know that humans weren't the first living thing to go into space, and asked them
what they thought might have gone into space before man.

I know that this cartoon is a dramatization of an actual tragedy, but I thought it was more
appropriate than actually sharing with them the horrible truth about Laika.  After nearly 50
years, Russian Space Teams finally revealed that poor Laika actually died shortly after takeoff
from stress and heat.  Her dead body was left to orbit Earth for months before everything burnt
up in our atmosphere returning to Earth.

You are welcome to share this romanticized version with your children, or conduct your own searches into the various animals that went to space before man (dogs, chimps, even a tortoise).  It really is amazing how far we have come in space travel in the past 60-70 years, but it is also sad to learn of the sacrifices made in the early days to help us get to where we are.  RIP Laika.  You are not forgotten!!

Student of the Week: Zoe

This week we are celebrating Zoe as the Student of the Week.  Zoe loves dogs and wants to be a Veterinarian when she grows up.  She enjoys gymnastics, Cinnabon, and reading about Dogs.  Zoe likes to visit the beach, the water park, and the snow (at Lake Tahoe).  Thanks for being such an awesome friend in our class, Zoe!!

Student of the Week: Anthony

Last week we celebrated Anthony as our Student of the Week.  Anthony loves Soccer and wants to be a professional Soccer player when he grows up.  He enjoys running, pizza, and coloring books.  His favorite places to visit are Disneyland, Mexico, and Sea World.  We are happy to have Anthony as a part of our class!!

Fact or Opinion for Kids

We have been working on writing an opinion recently.  Today I focused our writing lesson on highlighting the difference between a "Fact" and an "Opinion".  I wanted the students to walk away knowing that "facts" are what we all KNOW to be true, and that "opinions" are what we THINK or FEEL about something.  This video supports our lesson well, so I wanted to share it with all of you so that you can refer back to it if your children are still struggling with "What is a Fact?" and "What is an Opinion?".  I hope you like it...and keep on writing!!
-Mr. Linnet

Student of the Week: Jordyn!

Last week we celebrated Jordyn as the Student of the Week.  She is an amazing student that comes everyday ready to learn.  She is well-liked by all, and is very both thoughtful and kind in the classroom.  Jordyn enjoys swimming, going to the park, and visiting theme parks like Six Flags and Disneyland.  Her favorite food is cake.  Her favorite books are "My Little Pony", and she would like a baby Hippo as a pet.  When Jordyn grows up she wants to be the President of the United States.  We are so thankful to have Jordyn in our classroom and liked getting to know more about her this past week!!

Check out this great resource: Galactic Phonics!!

 Image result for galactic phonics

I found this last year, and it is a great program to work on phonics skills for your kindergarten student.
Everything is broken down into specific skills, and there is a variety of activities for your child to use.  Online games, worksheets, etc.  It's all here and as far as I can tell it is all FREE (except Letter Sounds, don't do that part)!!

To begin, select the skill you want to do (CVC Words, Consonant Digraphs, Long Vowel Sounds, etc.).
Next, select the resource you wish to use (sh resources, ea resources, oo resources, etc.).
Finally, select the activity you want to play (spelling, matchup, picture belt, multiple choice, etc.)
You can also print out spelling lists, crosswords, and other worksheets to practice away from the computer.

I have added the link to the list on the side, but I am also sharing it here if you want to jump in and explore this program now.  I guarantee it is one you will want to keep bookmarked for continued use.  Enjoy!!

Student of the Week: Dalilah!

Last week we celebrated Dalilah as our Student of the Week.  It was great learning about her and getting to meet her pet ferret named Pepper.  Dalilah was a terrific line leader and really enjoyed helping out and being a role model for her classmates last week.  From her board we learned that she likes strawberries, baseball, and The Little Mermaid.  Her family also enjoys the outdoors, and she shared some pics of her family camping, swimming, and fishing.

Thanks for being so awesome, Dalilah!!

Exploring Our Solar System: Planets and Space for Kids

Check out this cool video about our Solar System as we get ready to learn more about the Milky Way Galaxy!  Which planet is your favorite?  If you could travel in outer space, where would you like to go?  Why do you think Earth is the only planet with people, animals, and plants?  Discuss these questions and more with your family as we begin our unit on Space!!
