Student of the Week: Bani

This week we celebrate our friend Bani.  Bani is a happy student that greets me each morning with a beautiful smile and an excited attitude for whatever we are about to learn.  She loves her family going on fun trips.  She likes going to Disneyland and the beach, and has even traveled to France and Spain.  Bani's favorite food is pie and her favorite sport is Soccer.  She likes dogs and reading Princess books, too!  When Bani grows up, she wants to be a pilot assistant.  I think it's a pretty safe bet that this girl is going places.  I hope she remembers to share pictures with us as she travels the world!!

Have you checked out "Discover & Go" yet???

This program is free to everyone through the Solano Public Library.

Just click on this link on the Solano Public Library Website (or use the link provided), enter your Library Card ID, and select the dates/activities you wish to use.  I've used this program for at least 5 years now, and it is a great (and usually FREE) way to entertain the kids on rainy days or long weekends.  Where will you go this weekend?

Student of the Week: Mark!

This week we are celebrating our friend Mark (or Junior) as the Student of the Week.
Mark is a quiet, hardworking, and friendly person that gets along well with everyone.
He likes chicken, football, dogs, and his Planets book.  He loves playing games (like Hide & Seek) and watching YouTube videos.  His favorite places are DisneyWorld, Six Flags, and Jump Highway.
When Mark grows up, he wants to be an engineer so he can build things like big buildings!!
Thank you for being a positive member of our class, Mark!

What was the first known lifeform in space?

This was a question that I posed to the class today as we were learning about Jupiter.
I let them know that humans weren't the first living thing to go into space, and asked them
what they thought might have gone into space before man.

I know that this cartoon is a dramatization of an actual tragedy, but I thought it was more
appropriate than actually sharing with them the horrible truth about Laika.  After nearly 50
years, Russian Space Teams finally revealed that poor Laika actually died shortly after takeoff
from stress and heat.  Her dead body was left to orbit Earth for months before everything burnt
up in our atmosphere returning to Earth.

You are welcome to share this romanticized version with your children, or conduct your own searches into the various animals that went to space before man (dogs, chimps, even a tortoise).  It really is amazing how far we have come in space travel in the past 60-70 years, but it is also sad to learn of the sacrifices made in the early days to help us get to where we are.  RIP Laika.  You are not forgotten!!
