Gigi went to visit a family friend who keeps bees on his property. He has 4 active hives and 1 inactive hive because the queen recently died. Gigi learned the worker bees live on average for about a month. They work from sun up to sun down. They eventually die because they work and fly so much that they wear out their wings and they can't fly anymore. The worker bees fly around 4miles a day and carry the pollen on their legs back to the hive, which Gianna was able to observe. It is believed that there are around 50,000 bees per bee hive.
ReplyDeleteThe queen lives about 4 years and she lives on the bottom level of the hive. Her main purpose is to reproduce bees. She can not survive on her own. It takes the entire hive to work as a team to survive.
The bee keeper only harvests the honey once a year. He leaves the second level of the hive for the bees to feed on through the winter months. The top level he will harvest for humans to consume. He gets about 70lbs of honey per 6in high box.
At the end Gianna got to try fresh honey and take home her own jar of honey. She was a little nervous being up close but was very fascinated watching the bees fly in and out and listening to Ed, the bee keeper, and all his fun facts.
Sounds like an amazing experience for Gianna. Thank you for extending the learning beyond the classroom and giving her something real that she will never forget!
