This week's At-Home Project: National Park Report

This week is a fun research project based on learning that has taken place in the classroom.  In collaboration with our “Plants” unit, we have been reading about and studying some of America’s National Parks.  We have learned about the Sequoia Trees in Sequoia National Park, the Saguaro Cactus in Saguaro National Park, the wetlands in Everglades National Park, and the rock formations in Badlands National Park.  I have also added a “WebRangers” link to our blog that allows students to explore various parks, plants and animals that they find interesting.  What I would like for you to do this week at home is explore the National Park website (http://www.nps.gov/index.htm) and help your child select a National Park to do a report on.  Explore the webpage and write notes on the provided page about what you learn.  You can also explore other websites & YouTube to see videos about the National Park you have selected.  Feel free to post pictures or maps on the back of the report page for your child to share with the class on Friday.
Every student that completes the Report and shares their information at the end of the week
will receive a special “Student Ranger” Certificate!!  Have fun, Explorers!!

This week's At-Home Project: Non-Conventional Plant Model

This week our Kindergarten team is challenging each student to become an engineer and create a plant model using non-plant materials.  You can use legos, cereal, paper, cloth, anything you have at home to create a model of a plant.  Students choose the type of plant they wish to make, the materials they wish to use, and they design and build the model themselves.  When finished you can help them complete the response sheet at the bottom of the directions to help them when they will share their project with the class on Thursday.  Happy Building everyone!!

Lego Flowers and Flowerpot

Chocoloate Chip Cookie Tree

Paper Petal Flower (from Book pages)

Create your own Plant Model from non-plant materials

This week I am challenging each of you to create your own plant model from non-plant materials.  You can make a model of grass, flowers, bushes, trees, or any combination that you like.

You may use anything you have around your house that are not plants themselves.  You can paint a picture of flowers, build a tree with legos, make flowers out of tissue paper, anything you want.  BE CREATIVE!!
(It has to be YOUR original work: No buying a project or kit to put together!!)

You are going to bring in your plant model on Thursday to share with the class.
*Part of the grade will be on your participation. (Did you make a model?)
*Part will be on your description. (Did you write about it below?)
*Part will be on your presentation. (Did you share it with the class?)
This is intended to be fun, so don’t worry about perfection.
Just make something cool, write about it, and then share it with the class.

This Week's At-Home Project: Banana Log Cabins

Kindergarten President's Day Activities: President's Day Treats

In honor of President's Day Weekend, what better way to spend the extra day at home than in the kitchen whipping up a yummy snack?!  We have been reading and learning about Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, so why not pay homage to this great American and make a President's Day snack that depicts the tiny home he grew up in?  Instead of eating wood though, we can make a Banana Log Cabin!!  Please follow the directions provided to make your own tasty treat.  Don't forget to send in the pics before you gobble it up so that I can share them on the Blog!  Have fun and Happy Eating!!

Weather Project: Make a Silly Weather Vane

Last week I gave information in the homework packets on how to make a silly weather vane at home.  Daniel brought in a great one that he made with his dad that was painted to look like Darth Vader from Star Wars.  Adrian created this cool one.

What did you make???  Send in your picture so we can add it to the blog!  Hopefully you get to test out the weather vanes this week at home now that the rain has passed!
