Read Across America Day - Monday, March 2nd

Hello Families,          

Just wanted to let you know that next Monday, March 2^nd, is READ ACROSS AMERICA day.  We celebrate this day by focusing on the amazing children’s author Dr. Seuss.  We will be reading stories, making rhymes, and enjoying general silliness that comes from reading the many amazing stories he gave to the world. 

Your child is welcome to dress crazy (mis-match clothes, socks, accessories, etc.) and wear a crazy hat for the festivities.  They may also bring in their favorite Dr. Seuss Book to share with the class.  I will make a graph of which books were brought in and see which stories were the most popular.

Parents are also encouraged to stop in throughout the day for 30-60 minutes to share in the fun.  Read books, play games, and help encourage a genuine love for books!

If anyone has a portable griddle that they would be willing to bring in, that would be great, as I would like to make green eggs and ham with the class.  I will bring the food, but if 1 or 2 parents would be up for preparing and cooking while I am managing the chaos, that would be greatly appreciated.

Want to learn more about Dairy Farms???

Today we read about Farming.  We followed it up with a video about life on a farm.  Then we wrote about what we learned.  I thought over the long weekend I would provide another video about dairy farms.  Many of the students liked learning about how farmers work with animals and especially cows, so this short video gives the kids another look into the life of a dairy farmer.

After your child watches the video, please take some time to have a discussion.  Ask what they learned from the video.  What they liked or maybe didn't like from the video.  Ask them if they would like to live and work on a dairy farm.  You can also ask them questions about how farming has changed and see if they remember what we learned in class today about how machines and technology have helped make farming easier and more productive over time.

Our Class Weather Projects were AMAZING!!

I don't know if you had a chance to pop in and see what our students created, but their weather projects were stellar.  Videos, posters, models, etc., all on display teaching one another about clouds, rain, temperature, lightning, rainbows, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, evaporation, and even different weather tools used by meteorologists.  Here are some of the videos and posters that our class created:

There were more video clips but I couldn't get them to upload properly.  The class did an amazing job with these projects, and really seemed to walk away with a greater appreciation and understanding for weather and how weather affects us on Earth.

I think it is pretty safe to say that I have the smartest Kindergarten class on the planet!!

HAPPY 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL!!

The weather was beautiful, everyone came to school, and everyone had a terrific day today!
I love days like this where we get to have fun, make memories, and still learn cool things!

Mr. Linnet's Class on the 100th Day of School

Today was the 100th Day of School at Cordelia Hills Elementary.  We had a great day of fun and learning all focused around the number "100"!!

Our Counting Caterpillar (1-100)

Of course many of the students practiced counting to 100.  We used our caterpillar display to practice counting, as well as a 100 chart, the computers, a Super-Hero counting video, and basic body movements clapping and dancing to 100.

So EXCITED for the 100th Day of School

Here we are at the start of the day.  Everyone came to school dressed in their "100" capes, which are capes with 100 things attached to them.  The students have worked on them for about 5 days.  Many of the students also brought in a bag containing 100 things they collected at home (cereal, cards, shells, beans, toys, etc.).  It was a lot of fun and great to see them sharing the things they practiced counting and making at home!

Here are all of the "Counting Super Heroes" sitting at the carpet in their capes.  They were getting ready to come up to the front of the class, take a Super Hero pose, then tell us about their capes.  It was so awesome that everyone in class did this project (as each cape was both special and unique)!

The 100th Day Quilt that our class made

This is the 100th Day Quilt that our class made.  The students actually colored the hand squares yesterday, then I cut them out and glued them onto the large paper to make the quilt.  I had it posted on the window facing outside so that the other students could see it as they walked past our class (sorry for the glare).  Each hand increases by 5 to show how to count up from 5 to 100.  The kids had a lot of fun with this and it helped reinforce skip counting by 5's.  We will probably leave this up in our class or somewhere around the school all year.

Thank you to Mrs. Sanchez-Craig for sharing the photos, and to all the parents that helped today.  I hope that your children had fun today (and aren't too bummed out that the $100 I gave them today wasn't real).  If your child forgot to grab their math homework today (I gave them most of the day to work on it), then message me and I will put one in their cubby tomorrow.
